lyrics

We’ve got lavender farms and orchid fields
And thundering nights
And crackling reels of silence
And birds in the morning
I’m lost in their chorus
Of notes bending brightly
In octaves above our shade trees
Where you first spoke to me
I’m still in disbelief

That night old mission was clear
And swarms of beach bugs occupied the air
I couldn’t find the strength to steer
Butterflies sighed and lit the year

The trouble with detaching is I didn’t know I was latching
‘Till I lit out upstate
I don’t believe you were there if only the nettles cared
For the scars and the stories and the stinging
The sad songs we danced to are slowly coming true
Are they worth more than today without you?

Your hearts are growing smaller at the ends of your letters
And I know it’s for the better
But you still send them
and I’ll be keeping them

In the box above the hammers
Black and white and shattered
From a tune so broken
And a paper so tattered
I couldn’t read the notes
Your guesses were better

The trouble with detaching is I didn’t know I was latching
‘Till you drew back
To where you have others and I need another
To forget all we had
It’s not that I blame you it’s just I’d like to see you
And walk on the same freckled land

We’ve got lavender farms and orchid fields
And thundering nights
And crackling reels of silence
And birds in the morning
Maybe someday we’ll be there again

The trouble with detaching is I didn’t know I was latching
‘Till you lit out downstate
The sad songs we danced to are slowly coming true
Are they worth more than today without you?
